But what sets Eygalières apart is its calm. Even in the warmer months when Provence begins to hum with summer energy, Eygalières keeps its quiet charm. With a population of just under 2,000, the village never feels too busy. It's the kind of place where time slows down – and you’ll be all the better for it.

The Friday Market
If you’re in town on a Friday morning, don’t miss the weekly market. It’s small but full of seasonal produce, local honey, cheeses, olives and more – all with the kind of laid-back atmosphere that makes you want to linger. This is also a great chance to chat with local growers and sample some of the flavours of the region.
Chapelle Saint-Sixte
Just outside the village, set against a backdrop of olive groves and craggy hills, is the 12th-century Chapelle Saint-Sixte. This solitary Romanesque chapel has become something of an emblem for Eygalières, often appearing in local paintings and photography. Its setting is idyllic, especially in the late afternoon when the sun casts a soft glow over the landscape.

Eygalières is surrounded by family-run farms and vineyards, many of which offer tastings and tours. The olive oil here is exceptional – peppery, green, and full of flavour. Local wines are equally worth sampling, with reds and rosés that pair beautifully with the regional cuisine.

Eygalières makes a great base for exploring the surrounding region
St Rémy de Provence is just ten minutes away by car, and offers a bigger selection of shops, restaurants and Roman ruins. It’s also where you’ll find the Monastery of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, where Van Gogh spent a year painting some of his most famous works.
To the east, you’ll find the village of Oppède-le-Vieux, wonderfully atmospheric and full of medieval remnants. Maussane-les-Alpilles and Mouriès are nearby too, both known for their olive oil production and warm village squares.
Les Baux-de-Provence, perched high on a rocky outcrop, is a bit more dramatic. Its ancient fortress offers sweeping views, and the nearby Carrières de Lumières – a digital art space in a former quarry – is well worth a visit. The exhibitions here are immersive and beautifully curated, projecting classical and contemporary artworks onto vast stone walls.
If you love the outdoors, consider a walk or cycle through the Alpilles Regional Natural Park. The trails here wind through pine forests, vineyards and limestone hills, with plenty of picnic spots and scenic viewpoints along the way.
